Automating a roller shutter door in Zimbabwe is a different decision from automating one in a city with reliable power. The question is not only whether the drive can move the door, but whether the door still works on the days the drive cannot.
Roller shutter door motorisation in Zimbabwe
We automate existing manual doors and supply new doors motorised from the start, manufactured in South Africa and installed by our own team on a booked visit.
- Tube motors inside the barrel, which keeps the drive protected from dust.
- Side-mounted gear motors for heavy industrial and mining curtains.
- Three-phase drives where the site genuinely has the supply.
- Manual override on every single installation, tested and demonstrated before we leave.
The door has to work without power
This is the specification rule we do not bend in Zimbabwe. Every automated door we install has a manual release that an untrained person can operate under pressure, and on wide industrial openings we fit a chain hoist so one person can move a heavy door with no power at all. On smaller doors we quote battery backup as part of the installation rather than as an option. A door that only works when the grid does is not finished.
Surge protection and supply instability
More drives fail here from electrical events than from mechanical wear. Proper surge protection, correctly earthed, is part of every automation quote we write for Zimbabwe. It is a small proportion of the cost and it is the difference between a control board that lasts and one that does not.
Solar, generator and hybrid supplies
Many sites already run part of their load off solar or a generator. A door drive is easy to include if it is specified for it. We size the drive and the backup around what the system actually delivers, and we will tell you when a heavy door on a limited supply should stay manual with a chain hoist rather than be automated at all.
Automating an existing manual door
Before anything is fitted we check the barrel, the tension components, the guides and the curtain edge. On a door that has been hauled open by hand for thirty years, the barrel assembly usually needs rebuilding first. We quote that separately and state it plainly, because bolting a drive onto a worn-out door buys the same problem twice.
Choosing equipment your people can maintain
We fit mainstream drives with obtainable parts, wired conventionally and documented on site. A proprietary system that only its manufacturer can service is the wrong choice in a country where the manufacturer is in another one.
Safety devices
An automated door needs a safety edge, and on any opening the public or staff walk through it needs photocells as well. These are not optional extras on our quotes.
Handover and training
We do not leave a site until the people who use the door have operated the manual release themselves, know where the isolator is, and have the documentation. That takes twenty minutes and it prevents most of the damage we later get called back for.
What automation costs
The quote separates the drive, the control gear and surge protection, the safety devices, the backup, any door repair needed first, and the cross-border and installation costs.
Common questions
About roller shutter door motorisation and automation
Usually, yes. Most chain-hoist and spring-balanced doors can be converted, provided the curtain and guides are sound and there is headroom for the operator. The survey confirms it — occasionally the honest answer is that the door is too far gone to be worth motorising.
Yes. Every motorised door we fit has a manual override, and we can add a battery backup so the door operates normally right through an outage. Mention it at quoting stage and it is included rather than retrofitted later.
Remotes, keypads, key switches, loop detectors for vehicle traffic, push buttons and integration with existing access control. For high-traffic bays, loop or radar activation keeps forklifts moving without anybody touching a control.
Yes, and on a powered door they are not optional extras. Safety edges and photocells are fitted as standard, and closing force is measured and set within safe limits before we hand the door over.
