Garage door motors in Zimbabwe have to be chosen around one fact that decides everything else: the power will go off, and it may be off for a long time. A motor specified the way it would be in a city with reliable supply is a motor that leaves you standing outside your own garage.

How we work in Zimbabwe

We manufacture in South Africa and our own team travels up to install. That means the specification is settled before anything is built, and the installation happens on a booked visit rather than on an hour’s notice. It is a different rhythm from a city job and it produces a better result, because everything is thought through before the vehicle leaves.

Power supply, and why backup is not an option here

On our South African sites battery backup is a recommendation. In Zimbabwe we quote it as part of the door. A motor with no backup and a release nobody has been shown how to use is a door that stops working the first evening the power does. We fit the backup, we size it for a normal day of openings, and we make sure whoever uses the door has operated the manual release themselves before we leave.

Choosing brands you can still get parts for

This matters more than the specification sheet. We fit operators from ranges we can supply parts for across the border and that a competent local electrician can work on. An exotic motor with no parts pipeline into Zimbabwe is a throwaway however good it is, and we would rather fit something ordinary that can be kept running.

Sizing the motor to the door and the supply

What matters is what the door weighs once its balance is accounted for, and what the supply at the opening can actually deliver. On a farm or a lodge at the end of a long run, or on a property running from a generator or solar, we size the drive for what is really there rather than for a nominal supply.

Solar and generator installations

A great many Zimbabwean properties already run part of the load off solar or a generator. A door drive is straightforward to put on that supply if it is specified for it, and we size the drive and the backup around what the system can deliver rather than assuming grid power will be there.

Spares left on site

Because resupply means a border crossing, we leave a small spares kit with every motor installation: a spare remote, the common wearing parts and the fuses. It costs very little and it is the difference between a fault fixed in a morning and a fault that waits weeks.
