Galvanised steel is what we build most Zimbabwean orders from, and the reason is repairability as much as durability. A galvanised door can be fixed on site with ordinary workshop skills. That matters enormously in a country where the alternative is a replacement crossing a border.
How a galvanised roller shutter door is built
- Hot-dip galvanised slats in a gauge chosen for the span and the duty.
- Galvanised guides and bottom rail, because the coating has to cover the whole assembly to mean anything.
- Barrel and shaft sized on deflection across the actual opening.
- Manual or motorised drive, with hand operation always available.
Repairable with what is available locally
A galvanised curtain in a standard profile can have a slat replaced or fabricated by a competent local workshop, and its guides can be straightened rather than replaced. We choose profiles and component sizes deliberately with that in mind, and we leave the drawings and specification on site so anyone working on the door later knows what they are dealing with.
Galvanised doors on mining and industrial sites
Loading bays, workshops and stores across the mining and manufacturing sector run galvanised doors because a damaged slat is a morning’s work rather than a new door. On a site where a replacement means an import, that repairability is the entire argument.
Corrosion protection and where it has to go further
Standard hot-dip galvanising suits the highveld well. In the Zambezi valley, around the lake and in the southeastern lowveld the heat and humidity are considerably harder on steel, and there we specify heavier galvanising with a topcoat over it and better hardware. Specifying a highveld door into the valley is a common and expensive mistake.
Dust and guide wear
Mining and agricultural dust packs guides and grinds the curtain edge. Deeper guides, sealed bearings and a realistic cleaning interval in the handover documentation are what keep those doors running between our visits.
Gauge and span
Slat gauge follows span, exposure and cycle count. A wide opening in a light gauge bows and tracks badly, and on a door that has to last through long service intervals we specify up rather than to the minimum.
Security and locking
Galvanised curtains take end locks, reinforced bottom rails and deep guides, which is where the security lives. On Zimbabwean orders we specify locking heavier than the equivalent domestic job as a matter of course.
Maintenance and expected life
Serviced on the scheduled visits with the guides cleared and the bearings attended to, a properly specified galvanised door here runs for a very long time. The failures we see are packed guides and bearings that were never lubricated, not curtains that gave up.
