- Runs sideways along the wall
- Manual or motorised
- Suits low-roof and basement garages
A sliding garage door runs sideways on a track rather than lifting overhead. Across Zimbabwe it is frequently the best answer available, because so many of the buildings that need doors are wide, have no ceiling to speak of, and have plenty of wall to slide against.
Sliding garage doors we supply into Zimbabwe
- Single-leaf sliding doors where there is wall space to one side.
- Bi-parting sliding doors that open from the centre on wide openings.
- Folding sliding doors where side room is limited.
- Steel, aluminium and timber-clad leaves depending on the building.
Why a sliding door suits so many buildings here
It needs no headroom at all, so a shed can use its full wall height for the opening. It handles very wide spans without the barrel and deflection problems an overhead door has. And it can be moved by hand by one person with no power, which on a site with an unreliable supply is not a small thing.
Sliding doors on farms, estates and equipment sheds
Implement sheds, grading and packing buildings, workshops and stores on the sugar, tobacco and grain operations run openings sized for machinery rather than vehicles. A bi-parting leaf covers those spans economically and copes with dust better than a door that has to coil into a barrel.
Sliding doors on mine and industrial workshops
Workshop bays with overhead cranes, extraction or service runs across the ceiling leave an overhead door nowhere to go. A sliding leaf leaves the roof space untouched entirely.
Track, rollers and the ground
A sliding door is only as good as its track. Top-hung tracks need a lintel or steel that will carry the leaf, and on a purlin-framed shed we quote the bracing rather than assuming it. Bottom channels fill with dust and jam, so on most Zimbabwean installations we specify top-hung with a simple bottom guide rather than a channel in the floor.
Maintainable running gear
Rollers, bearings and the track are the whole door. We specify standard, obtainable running gear, supply spare roller sets with the installation, and set a cleaning and lubrication interval in the handover documentation. A jammed track is the commonest fault on these doors and it is almost entirely preventable.
Automating a sliding garage door
Sliding doors automate well with a rack-and-pinion or belt drive, the same principle as a farm gate. Manual release, surge protection and safety edges are standard, and on a long or limited supply we size the drive for what is actually available.
Security on a sliding garage door
Multi-point locking on the leading edge, anti-lift on the rollers, and a track that cannot be jumped. On a building standing away from the house, that specification matters more rather than less.

Common questions
About sliding garage doors
When there is no headroom at all and a wall to slide along. The door runs sideways on a track instead of lifting, so nothing occupies the ceiling. Common on converted garages, workshops and buildings with services running under the roof slab.
Roughly the width of the opening, alongside it, kept clear. On a wide opening we build the door in two leaves that part in the middle, which halves the space needed on each side.
Yes, with a sliding gate motor sized for the leaf weight. The track has to be kept clean for it to run reliably, so it suits a covered or paved approach better than an exposed one.
Debris in the bottom track and worn rollers, in that order. Both are cheap to put right if you catch them early; left alone, a door dragging on a fouled track will wear the track itself.
