Almost nothing to go wrong

Tip-Up and Up-and-Over Garage Doors in Zimbabwe

A single rigid panel that tilts up and slides back overhead. Simple, robust, and still the most common door on older South African homes.

  • One-piece steel or timber panel
  • Counterbalance spring mechanism
  • Motorisable with the right operator

A tip-up garage door swings out and up in one panel on a simple frame. In Zimbabwe it has a real and underrated advantage: there is almost nothing on it to go wrong, and everything that can go wrong can be fixed by any competent workshop in the country.

Tip-up garage doors we supply into Zimbabwe

  • Steel tip-up doors in the traditional ribbed and panelled profiles.
  • Aluminium tip-up doors where a lighter panel is wanted.
  • Timber tip-up doors where the house calls for it.
  • Single and double widths, on new or existing frames.

Simplicity as a genuine advantage

A frame, a panel, a pair of pivots and a pair of tension components. No power, no rails, no rollers, nothing to reset after an outage. On a property a long way from any specialist, that simplicity is worth more than sophistication, and we recommend these doors more often here than we would on a city job.

Where a tip-up door does not work

It needs clear space in front of the opening, because the panel swings out before it lifts. If a vehicle parks close or the driveway falls away from the garage, a roll-up or sectional door is the better answer and we will say so.

Frames on older and owner-built garages

The whole door depends on the frame being square and the pivots being level. On an added or owner-built garage that is frequently not the case, and replacing a panel on a frame that has moved will not fix a binding door. We check the frame at survey, because on a booked visit there is no room for that discovery on the day.

Balance and safe operation

A tip-up door is held by tension on each side, and the balance is the whole safety story. An out-of-balance door is heavy to lift and can come down hard. We replace tension components in matched pairs, set the balance so the door stays where you leave it, and leave a spare matched set on site.

Corrosion at the bottom edge

The bottom edge of the panel and the pivot arms are where these doors die. We specify better coating on those components than a standard domestic job would, because the replacement is a shipment rather than a trip to a supplier.

Automating a tip-up door

Possible with a rail-mounted operator and the correct arm, once the balance is right. Automating a heavy or badly balanced tip-up door is how operators get destroyed. We check the door by hand before quoting any motor.

What a tip-up garage door costs

Usually the least expensive door for a given opening, and often the most sensible. Priced on width, panel material, finish, frame and drive, with logistics and installation shown separately.

Common questions

About tip-up and up-and-over garage doors

Yes, and we still fit and repair a great many of them. They are the simplest mechanism we build: one counterbalanced panel, few moving parts, and cheap to repair. They remain a sensible choice for a detached garage where sealing is not critical.

That is how the mechanism works — the bottom of the panel arcs outward as it lifts. You need roughly a metre of clear space in front of the door. If you park close to the door, a sectional or roll-up door is the better fit.

Yes, with an operator that has a swing arm or a curved rail to follow the arc of the panel. The springs must be correctly balanced first — a heavy, badly balanced tip-up door will destroy a motor in months.

Almost always the counterbalance springs have fatigued or one has broken. It is a straightforward repair and should be done promptly, because an unbalanced tip-up panel can drop hard enough to injure someone.
