Wooden Garage Doors in Zimbabwe

Meranti, cedar and saligna garage doors built on a galvanised steel frame and sealed on all six faces before they are hung. Tip-up or sectional, manual or motorised.

  • Timber on a galvanised steel frame
  • Sealed all six faces before hanging
  • Tip-up or sectional mechanism

A wooden garage door is chosen for appearance, and it earns that choice on the right building. In Zimbabwe we supply them for established homes in the better suburbs, for farmhouses, and for lodges and hotels where the look of the property is part of what it sells.

Wooden garage doors we supply into Zimbabwe

  • Hardwood sectional doors with the panel construction that suits the elevation.
  • Timber tip-up and side-hinged doors on new or existing frames.
  • Timber-clad steel doors where the look is wanted with far less maintenance.
  • Meranti and other hardwoods, selected for stability rather than only for grain.

Timber on lodges and tourism properties

Around the falls, the lake and the game areas, a timber door is frequently the only thing that suits the architecture, and those properties usually have the maintenance staff to look after it. That is the right home for a solid timber door here.

Timber in this climate, honestly

Hard sun and a strong wet season move timber more than most owners expect, and in the valley and lowveld the humidity adds to it. A door sealed on all six faces, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees, moves far less than one finished only where it shows. On an exposed position we will recommend timber-clad steel and explain why before taking an order for solid timber.

Maintenance, and who will do it

A timber garage door needs recoating on a cycle, and out here a neglected one warps until it will not close, at which point the repair is a scheduled visit rather than a call-out. We state the interval for the specific opening at survey, and we ask plainly whether there is someone on the property who will actually do it. If there is not, timber is the wrong choice and we say so.

Weight, and what it means for the rest of the door

Timber doors are heavy. The frame has to carry it, the balance has to be rated for the finished door, and any operator has to be sized on the real mass. A timber door on hardware specified for a steel one fails early and takes the hardware with it, and here that hardware is a shipment away.

Hardware grade

The timber gets the attention and the steel around it gets forgotten. Hinges, brackets, tracks and fixings on a heavy timber door should be specified generously, because they are what holds the leaf up and they are what we cannot easily replace at short notice.

Timber-clad steel as the alternative

A steel or insulated door with a timber-look finish gives the appearance with almost no maintenance, at a lower price, and it will still look right in ten years. In this market that recommendation comes up more often than the solid timber sale.

What a wooden garage door costs

More than steel, both to buy and to keep. Priced on opening size, timber, construction, finish, hardware and drive, with logistics and installation shown separately.

Common questions

About wooden garage doors

Meranti is the sensible all-round choice in South Africa: stable, takes stain evenly and reasonably priced. Cedar is lighter, which matters on a wide double door, and naturally insect-resistant. Saligna is beautiful but heavy. Pine only works under a deep overhang with disciplined recoating.

Look at it once a year. If the finish has gone matt or chalky at the bottom rail or the vertical edges, sand lightly and put two coats on. North- and west-facing doors in Zimbabwe need it more often than sheltered doors at the coast.

Usually because the back and the end grain were never sealed. Water goes in at the unsealed edges and the board moves. We seal all six faces on the bench before the door is hung, and build the timber onto a galvanised steel frame that carries the load.

No — timber cannot curl around a barrel. A wooden door runs as a tip-up panel or as a hinged sectional door. If you have no headroom for either, a woodgrain-finish aluminium door gives the same look on a roll-up mechanism.
