A side-hinged garage door opens outward on hinges like a pair of large doors. In Zimbabwe it is a genuinely practical choice rather than a period one: no power, no headroom, no track, and nothing on it that a local workshop cannot repair.

Why a hinged pair suits stores and workshops
You can open one leaf and walk in, which nobody does with an overhead door, and you can do it with no power at all. On a fuel store, a chemical store, a tack room, a workshop or a mine store, that combination is exactly what is wanted, and it is why these doors remain everywhere on working properties here.
Repairable anywhere
Hinges, bolts and a steel or timber leaf. There is nothing in a side-hinged door that a competent workshop in any Zimbabwean town cannot fabricate or repair. On a remote property that is a considerable advantage over anything with a barrel and a drive.
Locking is the whole security story
Multi-point locking into head and threshold on the leading leaf, and shoot bolts on the slave leaf. A pair of doors locked only at the centre is easy to force, and on an outbuilding away from the house that is where entry happens. We specify the locking heavier on Zimbabwean orders as a matter of course.
Frames and hanging
The frame carries the whole load, and on a heavy pair that load is considerable. On a sheet-clad or purlin-framed building there is usually nothing suitable to hang from, so we fit a properly braced subframe and quote it as its own line at survey rather than discovering it on installation day.
Space and ground in front of the opening
The leaves swing outward, so the ground in front has to be clear and reasonably level. On a gravel or uneven apron the bottom of a leaf will foul, and we set the ground clearance for the surface as it actually is.
Hold-open catches
A pair of open leaves in wind will slam hard enough to bend a hinge or split a stile. Proper hold-open catches are fitted as standard rather than as an accessory.
Timber doors in this climate
Hardwood takes hard sun and heavy seasonal rain here. We seal all six faces, specify the timber for the position, and state the recoating interval honestly. On a very exposed building we will recommend steel instead.

Common questions
About side-hinged garage doors
Roughly half the opening width in clear space in front of each leaf. Check for boundary walls, steps, paving edges and where cars actually park. If the driveway falls away steeply from the garage we set the leaves higher and use a threshold seal.
Yes, with a swing-arm operator on each leaf, the same type used on driveway gates. It works well but is slower than a roll-up motor and needs the swing area kept permanently clear. Most of our side-hinged customers stay manual.
Because the leaves were hung straight onto brickwork. We fit a welded steel subframe into the reveal first, square and plumb, and hang the leaves off that with adjustable hinges so the door can be trued up later.
